You’re an S Factor Licensed Teacher. What is S Factor, and why are you bringing it to Flip Tease?
S Factor is a pole studio and female embodiment practice that was founded almost 25 years ago by Sheila Kelley. She was one of the first women to bring pole dancing as a fitness practice to the general public.
I found S Factor when I was at a low point in my life. I had been diagnosed with health problems that severely impacted my ability to move my body. I sought out a way to help myself and found S Factor. I found the slow sensual movement and the embodiment practice to be healing. I’ve been a licensed teacher since 2016 and finished the advanced training in 2018. I have attended retreats and have taken classes instructed by the founder, Sheila Kelley.
I want to share what I experienced with other women. S Factor no longer has a studio and the practice is only taught by licensed teachers like myself. I feel that women need a safe place to express themselves and I want to provide that. I have also never had as much fun dancing, as I had dancing with S women. It’s hard to explain how different the energy is. I want for the women of Flip Tease to have the opportunity to experience it.
How is S Factor different from other pole classes?
Over the years, S Factor grew to be more than just a pole studio and fitness practice. Where a typical pole studio is about learning pole tricks, flow and choreography, to be able to dance and perform routines, S Factor focuses more on the bodies relationship between movement, music and emotion. Instead of performance based movement, S Factor encourages conversational movement. We focus on developing body language and flair with an open invitation to explore how our body tells her story. It is through dance, that we have the conversation that tells our story. As each woman’s body is unique, each dance, conversation and story is unique.
You currently teach FFM on Thursdays. Can you explain a little about what happens in that class?
Yes! So, FFM stands for Fluid Feminine Movement. It is an introduction to sensual embodied movement. It does not include pole, but is where we learn the basics of our body language. We do floor and wall movements, very similar to the Flip Tease workout, that help build strength in the feminine form through a lot of circular movement. Strength helps our bodies build the confidence that allows us to trust that we can move without hurting ourselves. We go through a different sequence of movements each week. The movements we learn become our body language. We experience a wide range of music in class with a different playlist for each week. This gives the body the opportunity to explore what music and sounds she is attracted to. This class is held in a low lit room, so we aren’t distracted by the other women and can feel safe to move as our body pleases.
Are there any other S Factor classes you’ll be offering at the studio?
Yes! I have a Music Tasting Class in April 12th. And I hope to bring the Journey Series to the studio later this year.
What is the Music Tasting Workshop?
The Music Tasting Workshop offers the opportunity to explore music and movement sequences. We dive into music and how is connects to our bodies and our movements. What part of your body responds to certain music and sound? The music we like to listen to while driving, or working out, dancing at the club or pole dancing to, might not be the same kind of music our body wants to have a conversation with. What we enjoy with our ears may not be the music we enjoy in our bodies. In a music tasting, we explore what our body might like. How does your body respond to a heavy bass? A fast song versus a slow song? Does your body enjoy the sound of a piano, or that of a violin? Electric guitar or acoustic? Does your body respond more to a female voice or a male voice? What music and sounds allow your body to express herself? These are all things we explore in a Music Tasting.
The workshop will be on April 12th at 5:00. It will be 2 hours and will include a mini FFM workout, some more floor & wall movement, individual and group dancing.
